Editor's Verdict

Alifaan is a 2025 Maldivian crime thriller that follows Ibrahim, a man whose comfortable life is disrupted when he can no longer ignore the wrongdoing around him. As he becomes drawn into the dark, unequal, and corrupt layers of society, the film explores how an individual’s choice to act, or remain silent, can carry serious consequences. At its core, Alifaan is a story about moral responsibility and the price of confronting injustice.
The film is well executed, with particular strength in its direction. The way scenes are staged and paced adds weight to the narrative, making the unfolding events feel grounded and intense. The editing plays a key role in maintaining the film’s thriller elements, keeping the audience engaged throughout. The depiction of crime is convincing and handled with clarity, adding realism to the story.
Technically, the film performs strongly. Cinematography is visually effective, supported by good lighting that enhances the mood of each scene. While the color grading could have been more refined, it remains serviceable and does not distract from the overall experience. The music integrates well with the narrative, complementing the tension and emotional beats of the film.
However, the dialogue is one of the film’s weaker aspects. At times, the use of cursing feels forced, with an excess of vulgar dialogue that does not always add value to the scenes. This occasionally pulls the viewer out of the story rather than strengthening its realism.
Performance-wise, Alifaan is carried by Sharaf and Ravee, who deliver powerful and committed performances that anchor the film. Their presence and intensity hold the narrative together. Sheela and Aleef also perform well, contributing effectively to their respective roles.
Overall, Alifaan is a solid and engaging film that succeeds more through its direction, performances, and execution than through its dialogue. Despite minor flaws, it remains a good watch and a commendable effort within the Maldivian crime-thriller genre.
