
Hussain Munawwar (born 5 February 1988), also known by his nickname Kuda Foolhu, is a Maldivian film director, cinematographer, producer, and actor. He began his career in front of the camera, gaining early recognition for his role as Kudafoolhu—a manipulative devil character—in the Vasvaas short-film series directed by Yoosuf Shafeeu. His performance in these projects earned him the Maldives Film Award for Best Actor in the short films category.
Munawwar transitioned into filmmaking with his directorial debut, the 2011 romantic drama Sazaa, starring Ismail Rasheed, Niuma Mohamed, and Lufshan Shakeeb. The film was commercially successful and marked the start of his directing career. He also won the Best Cinematographer award at the 7th Gaumee Film Awards for his work on Sazaa.
He followed this with Dhilakani (2013), a romantic thriller that received mixed critical responses, and Neyngi Yaaru Vakivee (2016), both of which showcased his interest in storytelling that explores intense emotional and social themes.
In 2024, Munawwar directed Kamanaa, a film written by Mahdi Ahmed that centers on the struggles of a couple dealing with domestic violence and hardship. The movie achieved recognition at the 5th Karnataka International Film Festival, winning awards for Best Director, Best Lead Actor, and Best Lead Actress—a notable milestone for Munawwar and Maldivian cinema on the international stage.
