A Musical Spark in School Days

Fezu’s love for music started young. Her earliest memories involve singing in school and learning to play the guitar from her cousin. The first song she mastered, Mee Kiyaa Raageh, became a milestone in her life, igniting her passion for the instrument.

However, music wasn’t her original career plan. After school, Fezu pursued higher education in Sri Lanka, training to become a multilingual tour guide. Despite her academic focus, her guitar always remained a close companion, hinting at the artist she was destined to become.

A Chance Encounter with Music

Back in the Maldives after her studies, Fezu’s musical talent began to shine during casual gatherings with friends. Her public debut came with musician Aathi, but she still viewed music as a hobby rather than a career.

It wasn’t until she joined Munko’s Mirage Band, performing at iconic shows like Nasandhura and Haftha Ninmun, that she seriously considered a future in music. Her talent and passion drew attention, setting the stage for her eventual breakthrough.

The Birth of D-Tune

In 2002, Fezu began performing occasionally at resorts, often with rotating groups of musicians. Fate intervened in 2003 when she met Faathi, a guitarist, and soon after, other members who would become part of D-Tune.

The band’s official formation came in 2006 when bassist Ayya joined the group, completing the lineup of five. February 18, the date of their first show together, is celebrated as D-Tune’s anniversary.

“From that day, we were no longer just a group of musicians — we became a family,” Fezu reflects.

Overcoming Barriers

Fezu’s journey to success wasn’t without challenges. As one of the few women in resort music during her early days, she faced skepticism, even from her family.

“When I started, my mother was hesitant. She had hoped I’d follow a more traditional career path after studying abroad. I remember telling her, ‘One day, you’ll be proud of me, Mom.’”

Over time, her family’s support grew, with her mother, aunt, and younger aunt becoming her biggest champions behind the scenes.

Despite societal criticism and gender stereotypes, Fezu’s resilience saw her rise above. “I heard a lot of hurtful comments, but I learned to ignore them and focus on my work,” she says, crediting this mindset as the key to her success.

A Legacy of Music

Today, Fezu is an integral part of D-Tune, the band behind beloved songs like Achchee Chee Chee and Nazhaalan. Singing in multiple languages, her performances captivate audiences both at home and abroad.

Her commitment to her bandmates is unwavering. “All of us in D-Tune say we’ll stay together until the end,” Fezu says, highlighting the deep bond they share.

The Road Ahead

While Fezu is uncertain about the specifics of her future, one thing is clear: music and D-Tune will remain central to her life.

“Five years from now, I hope to still be with D-Tune,” she says. “But if I weren’t a musician, I’d probably be a fisherman.”

Fezu’s love for the sea often takes her on fishing trips with her bandmates, an activity she cherishes as much as performing on stage.

An Icon of Inspiration

Fathimath Fezu’s journey from a schoolgirl with a love for music to a pioneering figure in Maldivian music is a testament to passion and perseverance. With D-Tune by her side, she continues to inspire future generations, proving that with dedication and resilience, any dream is within reach.
