Mizna Ahmed, better known as Zooey, is a name that resonates with audiences across the Maldives. Over the past decade, she has become a household name, charming listeners and viewers alike through her work on Dhivehi FM and Television Maldives (TVM). From her unexpected entry into broadcasting to her acclaimed career as a presenter and producer, Mizna’s journey is one of passion, perseverance, and adaptability.

From Library to the Airwaves

Mizna’s foray into the field of broadcasting was unplanned. Initially employed as a librarian at the Voice of Maldives, she spent her days reading scripts and listening to archived programs. This exposure sparked her interest in presenting and producing.

“I didn’t think about being interested. But when I started listening to the things that were produced, I thought I’d really like to try something like this,” she recalls.

Despite organizational policies discouraging department transfers, Mizna applied for a producer position. After completing a short training course, she was given the chance to work on programs, proving her potential. Though initially hesitant to present live without a script, Mizna gradually became one of the most fluent and skilled voices on Dhivehi FM.

A Versatile Talent

Today, Mizna has become an A-grade host, presenting some of the most prominent programs on TVM and Dhivehi FM. Her versatility spans across radio, television, and stage shows, where she frequently hosts official events.

While she enjoys both mediums, Mizna holds a special affection for radio, as it allows her to express her “true self.” Programs that involve direct interaction with listeners, such as call-ins, hold a special place in her heart.

Highlights of Her Career

Mizna finds it difficult to single out one accomplishment from her rich career. However, she takes great pride in her work with Dhivehi FM, particularly in programs that resonate with the public.

“When the public hears and notices it, it really makes me happy,” she shares.

She is especially proud of winning Best Radio Presenter and her involvement in Dhivehi FM’s Karaoke Challenge.

Inspirations and Collaborations

When asked to name her favorite radio and TV presenters, Mizna struggled to choose, as she admires the talents of many in the field. Among radio presenters, she highlighted Ali Razi, Ramla, Ashida, Hassan, and Faheeda.

On TV, Mizna frequently collaborates with Rish Abbas, whom she considers one of the easiest and most enjoyable colleagues to work with. She also appreciates working with Moosa Waseem and Ziya, naming Moosa as her top choice for future collaborations.

Continuous Growth and Challenges

Despite her success, Mizna remains humble and views every program as a learning opportunity.

“I still don’t believe I’m very good. Every day, you learn something new,” she says.

She emphasizes that presenting requires mastering diverse skills, from live radio shows to TV interviews and stage hosting. However, like many professions in the Maldives, broadcasting has its limitations. Mizna acknowledges that even the most talented presenters eventually hit a plateau, with few avenues for further growth.

Adapting to Changing Times

Mizna has witnessed significant shifts in the broadcasting landscape, particularly the decline in radio’s popularity due to the rise of social media and streaming platforms. Yet, she insists that radio still holds relevance.

“Listeners calling into radio shows have decreased, but there’s still interest,” she notes.

Proof of this enduring interest lies in the uninterrupted calls during special programs, such as Radio Day and Ramadan shows, with participation from both Male’ and the atolls.

Mizna’s Legacy

Through her voice and personality, Mizna Ahmed has become a beloved figure in Maldivian broadcasting. Her dedication to her craft, willingness to adapt, and connection with her audience ensure her lasting impact. Whether through radio, TV, or live events, Mizna’s work continues to inspire both her colleagues and her listeners.
