In the Maldives, TikTok has become more than just a platform for entertainment; it’s now a space where young talents can showcase their creativity, connect with audiences, and even earn a living. Among the rising stars on TikTok is 21-year-old Yoosuf Shafeeu, popularly known by his TikTok alias, Badunaseeb. But this isn’t the film actor you’re thinking of. This Badunaseeb has carved out his own niche, blending humor, charisma, and traditional culture to capture the hearts of his audience.
A Humble Beginning
Born and raised in R. Maduvvari, Badunaseeb’s dreams were initially far from the world of TikTok. His childhood ambition was to become a military officer, a goal he briefly achieved. However, due to family circumstances, he had to leave the profession. Following this, he worked various jobs, including a stint at a resort.
But his heart was always close to his island’s traditions. From a young age, he participated in cultural sports, and in 2016, he was introduced to the rhythmic and energetic world of Boduberu—a traditional Maldivian drumming and dance form. Guided by a local mentor, Elshamlesh, he quickly became a passionate performer, joining a local Boduberu group and gaining recognition for his lively dance moves.
From Drums to Digital Fame
Badunaseeb’s TikTok journey began with simple video edits. However, his big break came when he joined a TikTok live session with friends on a whim. The live hosting experience ignited his interest in TikTok gaming, and his vibrant energy quickly drew in viewers. Within a short time, he became one of the Maldives’ most popular live hosts.
“For me, it’s all about entertaining the audience,” he shares. “If you make them laugh and bring good energy, they’ll keep coming back.”
He attributes his success to his ability to stay positive, avoid unnecessary conflicts, and maintain a sense of morality while engaging with his audience.
A Day in the Life of Badunaseeb
With no formal job currently, Badunaseeb dedicates most of his day to live hosting on TikTok. What started as a nighttime hobby while employed has now become a full-time pursuit. He sees it as a legitimate way to earn income while also honing his skills as a content creator and entertainer.
“This is a great opportunity for young people,” he says. “If you know how to navigate it, TikTok can open doors.”
Dreams Beyond Borders
While Badunaseeb has a loyal local following, his sights are set on going international. He dreams of becoming a prominent live host on a global scale, competing with top gamers and creators worldwide. As technology and digital opportunities grow in the Maldives, he believes the country has the potential to produce international stars.
“God willing, with the support of family, friends, and their ideas, I’m working towards that goal,” he says with determination.
Boduberu Forever
Despite his TikTok fame, Badunaseeb hasn’t forgotten his roots. Boduberu remains close to his heart, and he continues to perform whenever he gets the chance. For him, this traditional art form is the “lifeblood of Maldivians.”
“I’ll always be a part of Boduberu,” he affirms. “It’s who we are as a people, and it’s something I’ll carry with me no matter where I go.”
A Rising Star to Watch
Badunaseeb’s journey from cultural performer to digital influencer is a testament to the evolving opportunities for young Maldivians in the age of social media. With his unique blend of traditional and modern entertainment, he’s not just building a personal brand—he’s showcasing the vibrant spirit of Maldivian youth to the world.
As TikTok continues to gain momentum in the Maldives, one thing is clear: Badunaseeb’s star is only just beginning to rise.
